BigOven.com

BigOven is an established recipe and meal-planning product across web, iOS and Android. My work focused on continuously improving and extending the experience through new functionality, refined user flows and greater consistency across the product.

01 - My Role

I was responsible for UX and UI design across web, iOS and Android, covering new features, flow improvements, interface design, reusable patterns and developer-ready delivery. I also worked closely with development and QA throughout implementation and continued refining the product after release.

02 - Improving without starting over

Working on a mature product meant solving problems within existing technical and product constraints rather than redesigning entire areas. App Store reviews, customer-support feedback, competitor research and ongoing product knowledge helped identify usability issues and opportunities for improvement.
Each change needed to solve the immediate problem while fitting naturally within the wider product experience.

03 - Building consistency over time

As new features and improvements were introduced, I created and extended reusable components and design rules covering typography, spacing, interface elements and interaction patterns.
New requirements were considered in relation to existing flows so that improvements could be introduced without adding unnecessary complexity or inconsistency elsewhere in the product.

04 - From design through implementation

My involvement continued beyond the final Figma files. I reviewed designs throughout implementation, worked closely with development and QA, and refined details as issues emerged during the build.
This ongoing collaboration helped maintain design quality, resolve problems before release and support the product as it continued to evolve.

05 - Key design considerations

Working within established behaviour

Improvements needed to solve usability issues without disrupting patterns existing users already understood.

Connecting related parts of the experience

Recipe discovery, saved recipes, meal planning and grocery lists were treated as connected parts of one product.

Balancing immediate fixes with long-term quality

Each change addressed the immediate problem while also improving consistency and making the product easier to extend.
